The terms describe different scopes

A marketing funnel often describes the broader journey from awareness through demand and consideration. A sales funnel usually focuses more tightly on progression toward a revenue event.

The handoff is not always a line

In self-serve digital businesses, one system may handle marketing and purchase. In consultative sales, marketing can create and educate demand before a salesperson takes over.

Use behavior instead of department labels

Define stages around observable actions such as visit, opt-in, qualified lead, booked call, proposal, purchase and activation. This makes the model measurable across teams.

Choose the simplest useful model

A five-stage framework is not automatically better than three stages. Add a stage only when it represents a real change in customer state or a decision the business needs to manage.

Connect the models to one dataset

If marketing and sales report different definitions of a lead or opportunity, optimization becomes political. Agree on stage definitions and ownership before building more dashboards.
