What an order bump is

An order bump is an optional add-on presented at or near checkout. It usually uses a simple checkbox or compact selection rather than a separate sales page.

Relevance is the filter

The bump should make the main purchase easier, faster or more complete. A random product may lift short-term revenue while creating buyer confusion.

Keep the decision lightweight

Because checkout already carries cognitive load, the bump needs a clear description, price and reason to add it. Avoid forcing the customer to decode a second complex offer.

Measure beyond take rate

Track refund requests, support issues and customer satisfaction alongside bump acceptance. Extra revenue is not attractive if it weakens the core purchase experience.

Test against no bump

The correct comparison is not one bump versus another; sometimes the cleanest checkout converts better overall without an add-on.
